You don’t have enough bone for dental implant insertion? Bone can be augmented with different surgical methods and dental implant is inserted after bone healing.

Bone augmentation techniques

Description

The alveolar ridge may be too narrow or not high enough to insert an implant, so in the case of atrophic bone ridges, the bone must be augmented before the bone implant insertion. There are several methods of bone augmentation.
Bone augmentation with bone replacement and use of membranes (guided bone regeneration). With the help of bovine bone and a special membrane, the lost bone is augmented.
A closed sinus lift is performed when only a little bone in the upper jaw is missing. Bone augmentation is done with instruments through the implant insertion bedding.
An open sinus lift is done when larger amount of bone in the upper jaw is missing. Approach is done through the anterior wall of the maxillary sinus, where a bone substitute is inserted. Often the dental implant is inserted during the same procedure.
It is possible to augment the jaw with a free bone graft, which is transferred from one part of the body to another, where needed. The donor site is usually on the chin, behind the lower molars, or on the tuber of the upper jaw.
After the bone healing is completed (3-4 months), a dental implant is inserted.

Recovery

  • Week 1: Rest and cooling of the operated side. Moderate and temporary swelling of the cheek and lips is possible. You can return to work the next day. Good oral hygiene is mandatory.
  • Week 2: 7 to 10 days after the surgery the sutures are removed.
  • Month 3, 4: Dental implant insertion after bone healing is completed.

Instructions after the surgery procedure:

On the day of surgery and two days after it:

  • Do not blow your nose, sneeze with open mouth.
  • Do not drink from a straw, do not lift heavy loads or otherwise create overpressure or under pressure in the paranasal sinuses.
    Ice packs.
  • Do not smoke and drink alcohol.
  • Painkillers if necessary: Lekadol, Nalgesin, Naklofen, Arcoxia (no Aspirin).
  • Cold and soft diet and cold drinks, after meals rinse mouth with water.
  • Do not cut into the wound. Food debris that accumulates on surgical sutures at the wound can be wiped painlessly and safely with a damp cotton swab.
  • Take care of good oral hygiene (tooth brushing).
  • Do not apply any medication or dressing to the wound.

For up to six weeks after surgery, avoid strenuous exercise (such as cross-country skiing), chewing in the implant insertion area and extreme climatic stress (such as traveling to tropical countries). Do not use a dental jet or electric toothbrush.

If you have any problems in the weeks after the operation (increase in swelling 3 days after the operation, redness, pain, discharge, fever, sensory disturbances), come for a check-up immediately!
